Mawi donates one-third of his author's royalties from Of Beetles and Angels to the HAT Foundation, a non-profit organization Mawi founded to honor the giving spirits of his father and brother,
Haileab and Tewolde (HAT).

The HAT provides:
1. Educational resources and emotional support to recently arrived third-world immigrants in the United States.
2. Funding for AIDS and malaria relief in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
